Hyung Kyu Shin

Dr. Hyung Kyu Shin received his B.S. in 1959 and Ph.D. in 1961 from U Chemistry. He went on to complete postdoctoral work at the National Bureau of Standards and Cornell University, before joining University of Nevada, Reno, in 1965. There he built a distinguished career, serving twice as Chemistry Department Chair and earning recognition as the university's inaugural Outstanding Researcher of the Year in 1973. He has published over 210 papers in chemistry and physics journals, establishing himself as a leading voice in theoretical chemistry.

Sally Hunnicutt holding her glass distinguished alumni award

Sally Hunnicutt

Dr. Sally Hunnicutt joined the Chemistry Department after completing her A.B. at Duke University, earning her M.S. from the U in 1986. She went on to receive her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. Passionate about education, she also earned a teaching certificate. She went on to teach at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she remains, and has innovated an approach to lecturing - implementing a style she calls guided inquiry learning. Her pioneering work caught the National Science Foundation's attention, leading to grants totaling over $1.5 million and the creation of a national community of practice for physical chemistry instructors. Now professor emerita at VCU, Hunnicutt remains active in chemistry education while serving on the board of Richmond's Blue Sky Fund, a nonprofit providing outdoor and science education to underserved youth.

Michael Hunnicutt holding his glass distinguished alumni award

Mike Hunnicutt

Dr. Michael Hunnicutt received his B.S. and Ph.D. from Duke University, and was then recruited by Joel Harris to join the University of Utah Chemistry Department as a postdoctoral researcher. Harris and Hunnicutt worked together on various spectroscopy techniques, including photo acoustic and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Hunnicutt set up an organic chemistry surface laboratory with Harris and published several articles with other collaborators. He eventually began a career at Proctor and Gamble, leading a group called Research Analytical, before transitioning to a global pharmaceuticals company, Wyeth. Around the time Pfizer purchased the company, Hunnicutt moved to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he served as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) prior to being hired as a Teaching Faculty member. While at VCU and into his retirement, Hunnicutt continues to contribute to higher education through his service to Duke University, as a member of the Graduate School Board of Visitors and the Global Alumni Board of Directors. He also volunteers and serves at a number of local non-profits in the Greater Richmond area.
