More than 35 Years of Friendship: Chemistry Alumni Reunion by the Lake

This summer, several long-time friends and alumni of the University of Utah’s Chemistry Department celebrated a milestone of 25 years of reunions, as well as celebrating more than 35 years of enduring friendship.

Jane Behm Arrington (PhD '94), Caleb Arrington (PhD '94), Carol Rabke Orth (PhD '94), Kenneth Savin (PhD '96), and Lisa Wenzler Savin (PhD '96) have stayed closely connected since their days at the U, building a remarkable tradition of annual gatherings with their families. This year, they chose a lakeside location outside of Atlanta, Georgia, where two of their children are currently working. Their weekend was filled with stories, memories, and shared meals, including a visit from fellow alum Andrew Leavitt (PhD '94) and his wife, Karen.

The weekend was made even more memorable by a recent honor earned by one of the attendees, Dr. Kenneth Savin, who was named to Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Global Health for 2025. Ken’s recognition highlights the incredible contributions our alumni continue to make beyond campus.

This reunion serves as a heartwarming reminder that the bonds formed in the labs and classrooms of the Chemistry Department can last a lifetime—and that the impact of our alumni reaches across industries, communities, and generations.
