Congratulations to Tom Richmond, Ph.D., on receiving the 2025 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award for the Honors College! This award celebrates research excellence among all 18 colleges at the University of Utah and recognizes the importance of faculty members such as Dr. Richmond who are committed to their roles as mentors to student researchers. Faculty mentorship is extremely valuable to research culture at the University of Utah and does not go unnoticed.
Undergraduates in the Richmond group synthesize new Inorganic and Organometallic compounds, sometimes breaking exceptionally strong C-F bonds and in other cases making use of weak intramolecular forces to control the assembly of solid-state complexes (see images below). X-ray crystallography provides definitive characterization of new molecules at the intersection of art and science.
Dr. Richmond was nominated by the Honors College through a competitive internal process, which is reviewed and approved by the Office of Undergraduate Research Advisory Council. The award was presented during the Office of Undergraduate Research Awards Ceremony on April 9th, 2025 at the Olpin Student Union.
