Onboarding to U Chemistry

Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Utah!

We are excited that you have decided to join the U at this important stage in your career. Although there will be many specific procedures and trainings that you will need according to the research group you join in the Department, this document is meant to be a general checklist as you begin your employment as a postdoc. Communication is essential to a smooth onboarding and we encourage you to reach out to your advisor and the appropriate Departmental staff (listed below) with an questions you may have.

Initial Arrival Procedures
  1. Employment: Please contact payroll@chem.utah.edu as soon as you accept your postdoctoral offer for starting your onboarding process. Upon arrival, please make sure that you have made an appointment with Michelle Chen in the Chemistry Department Office to sign any necessary paperwork required for salary and the start of your employment.
  2. ID Cards: After the enrollment at the Chemistry Department Office, you can obtain your UCARD being registered as “Staff/Faculty”. If you request the UCARD before being registered at the chemistry department you will be listed as visiting scholar. Your UCARD gives you access to many facilities on campus and also the TRAX and bus system in SLC. You may get your UCARD from the Student Union Building (lower level). More information on transportation options can be found on the Commuter Services site.
  3. Keys and Access Authorizations: Amy Beardshall in the Chemistry Department Office can assign you keys and authorization key cards (if needed) after confirmation from your advisor regarding access.
  4. Appointment with Tax Specialist: Schedule an appointment with Tax Services & Payroll Accounting to define your taxation situation (tax treat with specific countries etc.)
  5. Online Orientation: Take new employee orientation to learn about the University’s benefits and commitment to your safety.
  6. Enrollment to Health Care: contact the Human Resource department to enroll in your insurance plan.
  7. Enrollment to Stock Room for purchases: The Chemistry stockroom is located on the first floor of the HEB. New stockroom users should email stockroom supervisor Cole Russell to setup an account.
